Author Visits

Schools, Kindergartens, Libraries, Playgroups

Karen visits schools and other educational settings to share her book Scruffy and Silk with the children.  She then discusses individual differences and uses music and actions to enhance the message.

Karen answers students’ questions about being an author, encouraging them in their writing journey.

She also provides worksheets for children to explore the text in Scruffy and Silk and do some of their own writing.

Scruffy and Silk is about a cat and a dog and their different personalities.  It helps explore individual differences.

The simple text uses alliteration, repetition, and descriptive action words aimed at early primary school readers. Scruffy is an appealing hairy little terrier and quite a contrast to the elegant and decorous Silk. The hand-drawn pencil illustrations by Kaz Clarke bring the story to life, with Scruffy’s expressive eyes and Silk’s monobrow and bow tied around the top knot on her head.

Karen held a great book reading for our school. She was a fantastic presenter and role model for our young writers. I would definitely recommend her for engaging young readers and writers to further develop their own sense of being an author.

Iain McDonald

Prep Teacher, Eastwood Primary School

We were delighted to have a visit from Karen Kepert. We were rapt to have her read to us. Her story about Scruffy & Silk brought up emotions and behaviours that the kindergarten-aged children found relatable and were relevant to them.

Anita Matthews

Teacher, Heathmont East Preschool

It was an absolute pleasure having Karen join us to share her book Scruffy and Silk. She had our students totally hooked from the moment she began reading and got them involved throughout the story. Her inclusion of song and movement allowed for students to connect with the story in multiple ways, and many students were discussing how they were different after her visit.

Alyssa Morgan

Year 1 head teacher, Eastwood Primary School

Thank you for visiting us today. We loved your book, and the song afterwards!
We've already been singing it, and adding in new verses.

Janice Campbell

Karen shared her beautiful book, sang a lovely song about how everyone is different and unique and then explained the process of becoming an author. It was wonderful to see all the students engaged in the incursion and we will definitely be asking her to come back to our school in the near future!

Melinda Michalski

Junior School Co-ordinator, Weeden Heights Primary School

It was so wonderful to have Karen join our Junior School for Book Week to teach us about her story and journey to become an author. Our students enjoyed participating in a group song and asking questions on how to become an author. Thank you for helping our students become even better writers.

Rachel Ferguson

Classroom Teacher, Warranwood Primary School

Thank you so much for your visit this morning. The students love having someone different to read to them and of course listen to a new story. The students had a lot of fun completing your activities and colouring in Scruffy and Silk. It was an excellent story. I am eagerly awaiting what you create in future.
