From Stigma to Spotlight: Independently Published Authors Launch National Catalogue of Classroom-Ready Books and Resources

A collective of 37 independently published Australian authors is flipping the script on outdated industry perceptions. Their new national initiative, Books for Teachers, puts high-quality, curriculum-aligned books and teaching resources directly into the hands of teachers, librarians, and parents across the country.

Historically, independently published authors have struggled to gain traction in schools and libraries due to lingering stigma. But that’s changing. Books For Teachers showcases a vibrant, professionally produced collection of children’s titles—each one carefully vetted and selected for its quality, relevance, and classroom suitability.

“As a former teacher, I think this collection is a fabulous initiative,” says Sandra Bennett, author of The Adamson Adventures. “It brings timesaving, enriching material into the hands of educators, home schoolers, and especially relief teachers. These aren’t just ‘busy work’ activities—they’re meaningful, ready-made units of work that truly engage students.”

Each book in the catalogue includes:

  • A detailed Teacher’s Guide or Book Guide
  • Discussion questions to ask before, during, and after reading
  • A downloadable PDF resource pack to extend learning
  • Age range suggestions as a guide (many titles are cross-age adaptable)

The collection spans themes such as wildlife conservation, diversity, humour, fantasy, and even spooky horror, offering educators rich opportunities to connect learning with student interests. Many titles are also ideal for CBCA Book Week themes like “Book an Adventure.”

Behind these books are 37 authors from across Australia, including teachers, scientists, journalists, a firefighter, psychologists, mathematicians, and a former lawyer. While diverse in background, they’re united by a shared mission: to create impactful stories and classroom resources that reflect a wider world and a deeper range of experiences.

Independent authors often write from the heart, guided not by sales trends but by personal connection and passion. Their work undergoes extensive drafting, editing, and professional design—often with multiple rounds of beta feedback—resulting in polished, high-quality resources that rival traditional publishing standards.

By purchasing from Books for Teachers, educators and families aren’t just accessing engaging classroom-ready content—they’re also supporting local creatives and helping to bring diverse, independently published stories into the mainstream.
